Dog trip down memory lane

Article about childhood dogs by Laure-Anne Viselé

OK, exhausted but feel like writing. Let’s go for a mental exercise that won’t grill my tired brain cells.

I’ve just finished tallying the dogs I have rescued and owned and, at the ripe old age of 35 (there, I said it), the tally goes up to…. ten!

I list them here, with snippets of their personalities.

A bit of stats:

  • Their sizes varied from from 20 (American Cocker Spaniel) to 160 lbs (Anatolian)!
  • There was a total of 14 breeds for 10 dogs, lots of mixes!
  • I’ve had 6 as adults, and 8 since puppyhood
  • The whole breed representation spans over 5x  FCI groups:
    • 6x in Group 1: Shepherds and Cattle dogs:
      • Old English Sheepdog
      • Belgian Terv
      • Belgian Groenendaal
      • Kuvasz x Maremma
      • Bouvier des Flandres mix
      • German Shepherd mix
    • 4x in Group 2: Molossoids
    • 1x in Group 3: Terriers: Fox Terrier
    • 1x in Group 5: Spitz and primitive types: Siberian Husky
    • 1x in Group 8: Retrievers & Spaniels: American Cocker Spaniel

Oli: Kuvasz x Maremma cross

Funny that, my favourite breeds are molossoids mountain dogs (e.g. Leonbergers, Great Pyrenese, Anatolian), although I’ve had way more shepherds when I was little, and my current one’s a fox terrier x English bulldog.

Ah well. That’s about it for my statistical foray into childhood dogs!

Comments?

  • So, how many dogs have you ever owned? Can you remember them all?
  • How many breeds have you owned? Are you a one-breed man, or ecclectic city, like me?
  • Did the breeds you had as a kid influence your favorite kinds of dogs today?

    Oh, I love this one!
You sure do like to mix it up with your dog breeds, don’t you?

My parents had a lot of beagle-type dogs when we were little, but I didn’t have much to do with their dogs. They lived outside and barked at me.

We …. like dogs, so we have a lot of them, although only one lives exclusively with me. (Okay, that’s arguable, as she spends nearly every night with my brother or my sister. *shrugs* Puppy sitters…)

he he he, I am THE uber breed geek. My husband has to physically restrain me or I’d stop EVERY dog owner on the street to check if I was right about my guess on their breed or breed mix!

So do you think that your childhood dogs have shaped your taste in dog breeds?

I think Jean Donaldson made that point in one of her books, where she asked all her tough colleagues at the rehabilitation shelter and a lot went weak at the knees for something tiny like a pomeranian or something, lol.

Hmmm. That would be fun to watch (you guessing the mix and then asking the handler!)

I actually don’t like beagle or small type dogs. I mean, they’re cute, but I favor working my dogs and teaching heel without having to rig target sticks or break my back. I love big dogs. (Actually, to be quite honest, I used to hate dogs – I’ve been attacked a time or two because of people and their tendency to pick on the dog and my idiotic tendency to get in between and try to stop it…. -_-)

So, I never planned to get dogs when I grew up. Period. But, of course, along came a cute little girl who was bruised and broken…and scared…and… Now, we have many dogs!

Oh that’s amazing. You’ve been traumatised by dogs and turned it around so much you now write about them! Now there’s an interview waiting to happen!
