Article about Dachshund trapped in sewage in the Netherlands.
By Laure-Anne Viselé, July 2010
A missing dachshund was found in the sewage in Winterswijk (the Netherlands) on 11 July 2010 after going missing for sixteen days!
Tessa, a female wire-haired dachshund, had been missing for 16 days when a neighbour heard a whimper coming out of the sewage. She called an animal ambulance when she realised it came from a dog. It took the rescue team three hours (in the searing sun) to locate the dog using a giant endoscopy tube. It was obvious that she could not be pulled out, so the municipality officer in charge ordered the fire brigade to break open the street!
Tessa was finally returned to her owners famished and shaken, but alive. She would have fallen into the sewage through a ditch. It is not known whether she spent the full sixteen days underground, nor how she fed and drank.
Tessa is a very lucky lady. She got saved by a chain of generous, quick-thinking and high-tech actions.
A big round of applause to all involved, especially the city official who ordered the street be cut open! Here’s wishing Tessa a prompt and happy recovery.
